GO HOPE - Alabama Drive

We are pleased to announce the launch of our grass-roots charitable organization, "GO HOPE": Greek Orthodox Helping Other People Everywhere. It is an outgrowth of the charitable efforts that the individual parishes of the Metropolis (Diocese) have been carrying on since their respective foundations. For instance, they have been feeding the homeless in many parishes around the country for years.

Their current project involves helping the tornado victims of Alabama. They have gathered a massive amount of donations, including baby supplies, toys, nonperishable foods, and hygiene supplies, to name a few things. They have rented a 26 foot truck that will be filed with the donations and driven to Tuscaloosa, Alabama by Bishop Christodoulos this Monday morning, May 16, 2011 (n.s.).

This current initiative began when one of Holy Unmercenaries Parish in Chicago's members, a doctor in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, saw the devastation which occurred around her as a result of the tornadoes and reached out to her extended parish family to help the victims of the tornado. A few photos appear below, and more will be added as the truck is loaded tomorrow, Sunday, May 15, 2011 (n.s.).

Missions

Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Mission, Tucson, Arizona

Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church is a beautiful mission parish near downtown Tucson, a city in southern Arizona. It was started in 1997 by Father John Bockman, who was a missionary Priest formerly serving missions in Tennessee and Massachusetts since 1990. Father John served the faithful in Tucson and the surrounding area in his home Chapel until his repose in November of 2000. His wife, Presbytera Valerie, continued to make her home Chapel available for the mission, with clergy from Saint Nectarios Orthodox Church in Seattle and His Eminence, Metropolitan Moses of Toronto (then of Portland), visiting to provide the Divine Services.

Q. There seems to be a lot of variation in how people observe fasting, but my confessor told me to fast from oil on Wednesday and Friday.
