Feast of Unmercenaries 2005

His Eminence Metropolitan Pavlos, accompanied by His Grace Bishop Christodoulos of Theoupolis, Archimandrite Niphon, Protosyngellos of the Metropolis and Hierodeacon Savvas traveled to the Parish of the Holy Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian in Alsip Illinois and celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Sunday Oct. 31/ Nov. 13 which was followed by a procession of the Relics of St. Pachomios of Chios which His Eminence brought with him to Illinois; and a Banquet celebrating the 34th anniversary of the founding of the Parish by Mr. Constantinos Langis who is the biological brother of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Mattheos of Oinois.

On Monday, Nov. 1/14 Bishop Christodoulos celebrated the Divine Liturgy for the actual Feast of the Holy Unmercenaries assisted by the Protopresbyter of St. John the Forerunner in Willow Springs Ill., Hieromonk Longinos and Hierodeacon Savvas.

A Brief History

In the early 20th century, the idea of promoting the union of Churches (Orthodox and heterodox) began to gain ground among circles in the Eastern Orthodox Church by establishing a "Communion of Churches" modeled on the League of Nations.

The Patriarchal Encyclical of 1920 foresaw a series of steps toward the “union of the Churches,” of which the first was the change of the calendar for the simultaneous celebration of feast days by all the “Churches.” The content of the encyclical was kept secret from the faithful and only after a few years became known.
